Of Justification from the Westminster Confession of Faith

I. Those whom God effectually calleth he also freely justifieth..; ""Whom he did predestinate, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified; and whom he justified, them he also glorified." (Rom. 8:30) - "Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus." (Rom. 3:24)
... not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardinon their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous: not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's sake alone: not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience, to them as their righteousness; but by imputing the obedience and satisfaction of Christ unto them... "To him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousenss without works, saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin." (Rom. 4:5-8)
- "God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them: and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." (2 Cor. 5:19-21)

Of the Fall of Man, of Sin, and of the Punishment thereof
from the Westminster Confession of Faith

I. Our first parents being seduced by the subtilty and temptation of Satan, sinned in eating the forbidden fruit.
"The Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat." (Gen. 3:13)
- "I fear... as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ." (2 Cor. 11:3)
This their sin God was pleased, according to his wise and holy counsel, to permit, having purposed to order it to his own glory. "God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all." (Rom. 11:32)

II. By this sin they fell from their original righteousness, and communion with God...
"And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. And the eyes of
them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden." (Gen. 3:6- 8)
- "Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions." (Eccl. 7:29)
- "All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Rom. 3:23)
... and so became dead in sin... ""But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Gen. 2:17)
- "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins." (Eph. 2:1)
... and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of soul and body. "Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled." (Tit. 1:15)
- "God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." (Gen. 6:5)
- "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" (Jer. 17:9)
- "There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre: with their tongues they have used deceit: the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood:
Destruction and misery are in the ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes." (Rom 3:10-18)
