10 YEARS OF LEGALISED ABORTION: A NATIONAL DISGRACENATIONAL DAY OF REPENTANCE FUNERAL PROCESSION AND PARLIAMENTARY PRAYER VIGIL 2007On 1 February 1997 abortion-on-demand was legalised in South Africa. By 1 February 2007 over 600, 000 South African babies had lost their lives through abortion - legally - with tax payers money. Cape Town: On 1 February 2007, a funeral procession was hosted by the Christian Action Network in memory of the thousands of babies, killed by abortion, who have never had a funeral. For photos of the funeral procession and Prayer Vigil click here. Marchers carried miniature coffins and crosses and were led by a hearse. A six metre billboard trailer, with the words, “Abortion Kills Babies”, and “Speak Up For Those Who Cannot Speak For Themselves” (Proverbs 31:8) followed the marchers. Thanks to generous sponsors, the Pro-life Billboard trailer was driven around the Northern and Southern suburbs of the Peninsula and Cape Town city center for three days. Over 120 Christians, including numerous pastors from different denominations took part in the procession and gathered afterwards to pray outside the main gates of Parliament in Cape Town. Thousands of Gospel tracts and Pro-life literature was handed to passers by. Steve Swart, MP, who spoke and prayed at the Prayer Vigil, said “40 Years ago, the first heart transplant took place in Cape Town. After 10 years of abortion we all need a spiritual heart transplant.” Christian leaders signed an Imprecatory Prayer Proclamation that will be handed to a representative from the Health Portfolio Committee. (Click here to read the Imprecatory Prayer Proclamation). Following the Prayer Vigil, several of the participants, along with the billboard trailer, went and demonstrated outside the Marie Stopes abortion clinic. “Every abortion stops a beating heart. Life is precious and should be protected,” says Taryn Hodgson, National Co-ordinator of the Christian Action Network. “We call the nation to prayer and repentance for this national sin of abortion.” Obituary notices were placed in Die Burger and The Citizen newspapers in memory of all babies killed by abortion since 1997. The Cape Times and Argus refused to accept obituary notices in memory of the babies killed by abortion. In Bloemfontien, several doctors came out to speak to the demonstrators gathered outside the National District Hospital to show their support and appeal to Christians to help counsel women in crisis pregnancy situations. In Durban, 15 people demonstrated, prayed and handed out leaflets to people on the streets outside the Marie Stopes clinic. A lady called Cynthia was on her way to have an abortion and Pastor Logan asked if he could pray with her. She said she was HIV positive and wanted to abort the baby as she may not be able to care of her baby in the future. After prayer, she changed her mind! Praise the Lord! One participant commented after the Cape Town Prayer Vigil, “ What an eye opening. God forgive me for my ignorance in the past. I’ve got work to do in educating others and so do many others I spoke to on my way home from the march.” Pro-life demonstrations and prayer vigils, organized by Christians For Truth and other friends, took place on the 1 st, 3rd and 4 th of February in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Stanger, Durban, Bloemfontein and Kimberley. The Christian Action Network had 12 different media opportunities (commercial and community radio stations and newspapers) to alert the public to the abortion holocaust. Our prayer is that God receives all the glory and that many lives were saved as a result of these National Day of Repentance demonstrations and prayer vigils. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Proverbs 31:8 What can you do to save lives?Inform your congregation or cell group/Bible Study: Pro-life resources: God's Miracle of Life DVD, Pro-life leaflets, Fight for Life: a Pro-life Handbook for Southern Africa. * For Christians, that they would understand when life begins and what abortion really is. * That medical personnel would refuse to have any part in the killing. * That voters would not support candidates who are pro-abortion. * For mothers in crisis pregnancy situations, that they would find help and choose loving options such as adoption. * That lives would be saved * That journalists would publish the other side of the story. * That many more pastors and churches would be encouraged to speak up for the right to life of pre-born babies.
