Mobilise For Firearms And Freedom!
Peter Moss
What do firearm owners need the most besides a miracle or a magic wand? If ears have not been deceiving others and myself then there is a very urgent need of a pro-active national firearm organisation.
With this in mind a meeting was set up in Cape Town last year in October. Hosted by Victims Against Crime invitees were treated to the hospitality and generosity of the people of the Cape. A trip that will be well remembered by those who did it the hard way and travelled the 3200kms by car.
Many ideas were discussed but what stood out was that an organisation that was going to capitulate, forget about legislation once passed or not continue to fight for change in as meaningful way as possible was the last thing desired.
What we have to understand is that a pro-active organisation simply cannot achieve its aims if it is not well funded. A constitutional court challenge for example will result in more than R400,000 being spent. Thus, such an organisation must be able to attract as many members and funding as possible to make such challenges possible.
There were two options open, to start from nothing and build up the organisation which will take years, and years are not available, or to find a suitable springboard, an existing organisation that would consider a takeover. That a suitable organisation could be found is more than luck, perhaps fate.
Yet that is where we stand today with an offer on the cards and a negotiation process to complete. Now nobody is just going to give us a functional organisation, somehow we and that means everybody who wants this to succeed must pull together. What we need to show is that we are not just serious but have at least a minimum infrastructure in place with a functional plan of operation or action. Therefore to get this up and running quickly representatives are needed in as many provinces, cities, towns and suburbs are possible.
These volunteer representatives will part time canvas for enough members to form the first elected committees. By canvassing, handing out and distributing membership forms at club meetings, firearm dealers, farmers halls and any other place of their choosing it is hoped that the nucleus of the organisation will be started. It is the bare minimum requirement for the steering committee to negotiate the hand over with. Simply put, no volunteers, no organisation.
What we get is an office with equipment and staff, the organisation lock, stock and barrel. But, and there always is a but, it is not going to happen unless sufficient people volunteer to get it up and running so that we can show our credentials, our willingness to grow this organisation and our commitment to the task.
