"Why do you observe the Roman Catholic Sabbath? You should worship on a Saturday."

Greetings in the precious Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Yes, we are most certainly agreed that the problems in South Africa are only part of the worldwide problem. Man is in rebellion to Almighty God. We need to use the Law of God as the schoolmaster to lead people to Christ, that they may be justified by faith.

If anyone loves Christ, he will keep His commandments. We are serious about being faithful to the heritage of the Protestant Reformation. Scripture alone is our ultimate authority, we are saved by the grace of God alone on the basis of Christ's sacrifice on the cross of Calvary alone, received by faith alone.

You refer to the fourth commandment as the Creation Sabbath not the Roman Catholic Sabbath. Are you aware that the vast majority of Christians, including the Protestant Reformers, observed the first day of the week as the Lord's Day in remembrance that the Lord Jesus Christ has risen from the dead on the first day of the week, and that the birthday of the church was on the day of Pentecost, the first day of the week.

The practice of believers gathering on the first day of the week long precedes the establishment of the Roman Catholic superstitious system. It isn't fair to condemn dedicated Christians who seek to give God the first fruits of the week, the first day, in honour of the Lord's Resurrection from the dead (the re-creation). (See: Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2 and Revelation 1:10).

In fact, it is a tremendous testimony to the reality of the bodily resurrection of Christ Jesus from the dead that the church has moved from the Jew's seventh day Sabbath to the Christian first day of the week, the Lord's Day.

May the Lord continue to be your joy and strength.

Yours for the fulfillment of the Great Commission

Dr. Peter Hammond
