The Trauma of Abortions

I would like to thank journalist Bronwynne Jooste for letting women speak for themselves about their experiences of abortion (“Life and Death Tales” Weekend Argus, 19 January 2008).

Abortion is indeed a trauma. It leaves one dead and one wounded.

The woman who had an abortion at a public hospital, Nolwabo, claimed that she is now “fine” and is “looking forward to starting her new life”. Sadly, she did not give her baby the opportunity to live. I certainly sympathise with her bitterness towards the boyfriend her coerced who her into having an abortion. However, most women who have had an abortion may feel relief at first, but 5 and sometimes 10 years down the line they experience severe psychological disturbances such as nightmares, depression and even suicidal tendencies. This is well documented by research.

Shekinah (the second woman) is right. She did “end a life”. My encouragement to these women is that they can find freedom and forgiveness in Christ, if they repent.

Christians need to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves by joining Africa Christian Action’s pro-life march to Parliament on Friday, 1 February in Cape Town.
