Cape
Times, Facts About Porn, 1 May 2002
Mr.
Johnson appears to be determined to defend his hunger for porn (Are
we so dim? 1 May 2002). The facts speak for themselves:
| · |
In a study, 86% of rapists admitted regular use of pornography,
with 57% of serial rapists acting out the scenes depicted. (William
Marshall, Report on the Use of Pornography by Sexual Offenders,
1983) |
| · |
Rapists
are 15 times more likely than other people to have had exposure
to hard-core porn (the type of porn in Hustler and similar magazines)
during childhood. (Goldstein, Kant and Harman, 1973) |
| · |
In
a ten year study, the Los Angeles Police Dept. found that in 60%
of child molestation cases, adult or child porn was used to destroy
the conscience of the child and teach them to model perverse behaviour.
(Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, 1986) |
| · |
A
Cleveland Ohio study showed that the incidence of rape and robbery
was two to seven times higher where porn outlets were located.
(NCPCF, Pornography's Link to Rape, Crime and Child Molestation,
1998) |
| · |
In
1996 the Films and Publication Act was passed, legalising pornography
for the first time in South Africa. South African Police Services
records show that child rape increased
over 400%"!
The police report further noted that: "Research with child
sexual offenders reveals that ALL have used child pornography." |
Yes pornography does infringe on people's rights. Considering the
facts and our current context of a culture of abuse against women
and children - e-TV should scrap their "Sex TV" channel.
