“The Worst Day of My Life” – Woman Reveals Traumatic Experience At Marie Stopes Abortuary

No Counselling

“At no point was I offered any counselling, comfort, or sympathy, by any of the staff. The alternatives to abortion were never given, and the possible physical and psychological after-effects of abortion were never explained at the pre-abortion appointment. What actually occurs in the procedure itself was never explained.

“The worst day of my life”

“It was the worst day of my life. Since this experience I have had to take heavy medication to relax and calm me down. Marie Stopes’ advertising claims they offer safe abortions, with professional, caring nurses and doctors. In my opinion it is an abortion factory and calling themselves a non-profit organization is a total joke, as the receptionist doesn't even refer to women as patients, but as clients!”

Settled Out of Court

In another case that occurred at Marie Stopes Cape Town, a woman suffered huge trauma on coming round from her anaesthetic because the anaesthetist had left early and the nurses were unable to cope with an emergency situation. The case has now been settled out of court to the woman’s satisfaction. The woman also says she was not given any counselling prior to the abortion.

“I cringe when I think of that day.”

Another woman who had an abortion at Marie Stopes in Pretoria complained of similar treatment. She reported, “I was sent home with pain tablets. A week later I was still bleeding. I then rushed back to the clinic. The doctor was not there and the nurse took it upon herself to do another procedure, this time without a sedative. I thought I was going to die from the pain. I remember shouting out from the pain and the nurse’s assistant put her hand over my mouth. She told me to shut up! I cringe when I think of that day.”

In September 2006, a woman was awarded R500 000 in damages by a Pretoria Court because of a botched abortion at Marie Stopes Pretoria which resulted in an emergency hysterectomy, and left her unable to bear any more children.

Christian Action encourages women who have received similar inadequate medical attention, or abusive treatment by abortuary staff, to report their experiences to the Justice Alliance of South Africa (021 – 713 3259 or, This email address is being protected from spambots. Illegal Abortions

In a video recorded by the Population Research Institute, at the Global Safe Abortion Conference in London 2007, Paul Cornellisson, Marie Stopes Programme Director for South Africa at the time, brazenly admitted that his organization “does illegal abortions all over the world” and therefore they should encourage and assist women in countries across South Africa’s borders to commute to Johannesburg to have abortions. (See the YouTube clip here ).

Who was Marie Stopes?

Marie Stopes, (1880-1958) was, like Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, a prominent campaigner for eugenics policies that found their full expression in the Nazi euthanasia programmes before and during World War II.

In “Radiant Motherhood”, Stopes called for the “sterilization of those totally unfit for parenthood to be made…compulsory." In “The Control of Parenthood" she said that "utopia could be reached in my life time" if she had power to “legislate compulsory sterilization” of the “insane”, “feebleminded”, “revolutionaries” and “half-castes.” Following her death in 1958, a large part of Stopes' personal fortune went to the Eugenics Society.

One Dead and One Wounded

Considering the fact that Marie Stopes’ staff are involved in killing hundreds of defenceless babies daily, it is no wonder that women have experienced such callous and cruel treatment there. Abortion is never safe or pain free. It leaves one dead and one wounded.

Speak Up for those Who Cannot Speak for Themselves

There are over 36 000 churches in South Africa. There are over 30 000 ministers in the country. If just half of them could be inspired to study what the Word of God says on when life begins and what abortion is; if only half the churches in South Africa observed Sanctity Life Sunday (26 January 2014) in Bible study, repentance and prayer - then we could begin to end the legalised killing of babies in South Africa.

National Day of Repentance

The 1st of February 2014 will mark the 17th anniversary of the legalisation of abortion on demand in South Africa. For this reason, Christians who respect the Sanctity of Life will be observing 31 January as a day of prayer and repentance for the national sin of abortion. On Friday, 31 January, Africa Christian Action will be holding a prayer vigil outside the gates of Parliament. This will be preceded by a solemn funeral procession March to Parliament.
