What You Can Do About Illegal Abortionists

Print

Unsafe
What has shocked authorities is that these practitioners offer to provide "safe abortions" for pregnancies up to seven months. Even in the case of legal abortions, no woman who is over 12 weeks pregnant can demand to have an abortion.

Unhygienic
The “doctors”, who advertise on lampposts and building walls, or whose employees hand out flyers to people on the streets, mostly operate under the guise of ‘professional herbalists’.

Anonymous
The few who advertise as “doctors” only give out their first names and cell phone numbers and they do not say where they operate from until one makes an appointment.

Unqualified
The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) said the fact that the names of the “doctors” were only written as “Dr Cure” or “Dr Liezel” was a clear indication they were not registered with any organisation as the full details were not given – including their registration numbers or the premises from where they operated.

Life-Threatening
Only qualified medical practitioners are legally permitted to carry out abortions. Women are risking their lives by going to these unsanitary, unqualified "doctors".

Fraudulent
The HPCSA said it had no jurisdiction over "bogus practitioners" and anyone "masquerading" as a medical practitioner must be reported to the police.

Criminal
The council added that operating without the registration of the relevant regulatory authority was a criminal act.

Metro Police Take Action
Encouragingly, some metro police are taking action. A man was fined R15 000 on Wednesday (24 September 2014) by the Johannesburg metro police for putting up posters advertising services for illegal abortions.

What You Can Do

How to Lay a Charge Against Illegal Abortionists at Your Local Police Station:

Download this form to lay a charge against local illegal abortionists at your local police station. The form details the laws that these backstreet abortionists are breaking: The Termination of Pregnancy Act and Medicines Act. Take this form with you to your local police station along with a photo, or copy, of the abortionists’ poster. Note the locations and list all the different cell numbers.

1.      Tear the posters off if you can, or wet them and scrape them off with a paint scraper. They are advertising illegally. Some churches conduct prayer walks around their neighbourhoods and scrape off these posters at the same time.

2.      Urge your local community newspaper and radio station to expose these abortionists, interview pro-life groups and to provide the contact numbers of Crisis Pregnancy Centres.

3.      Obtain pro-life DVDs such as The Abortion Matrix, God’s Miracle of Life or Abortion: The Real Story to educate your congregation or school on the right to life.

4.      Begin now to mobilise your congregation to observe International Life Chain Sunday(5 October 2014), Sanctity Life Sunday (last Sunday in January every year) and the National Day of Repentance (1 February every year).
