Christian Action Annual Report 2015

Muizenberg New Year's Day Outreach

By God's grace, some participants of the Great Commission Course who arrived in Cape Town early were able to join us for the Muizenberg New Year's Day Outreach at Muizenberg. Thousands of Gospel leaflets and booklets in many languages were distributed to the crowds swarming onto Muizenberg beachfront on New Year’s Day. Evangelist Paul Young presented the Gospel through various chalk talks for over 2 hours while volunteers distributed Gospel literature and engaged in one-on-one personal Evangelism. Some people asked us to pray with them.

Changing Your World for Christ – Great Commission Camp
Our Great Commission Course began with over 80 people from all over the world participating in an intensive 5-day Great Commission Camp held out at Back to Basics, near Grabouw. The camp stretched minds and muscles as participants learnt how to change their world for Christ. Presentations included: Turning the World the Right Side Up, Evidences for Skeptics, The Law of God, Restitution and Revival, Sin and Its Implications, The Failure of Atheism and the Triumph of Faith in Russia, Reclaiming Surrendered Ground, Resisting Babylon and the Beast, Legalism and Antinomianism, Reaching Young People for Christ, Will Animals Be in Heaven?, The Message in the Music, Recognising God’s Voice, and Christian Action. Workshops included: an Evangelism Workshop incorporating Way of the Master and Evangelism Explosion principles, self-defence and Bushcraft Survival Skills. We also put feet to our Faith by sharing the Gospel one-on-one in the streets of Grabouw.

Taking a Stand for Life
Then the Great Commission Course continued with 22 participants. Outreaches undertaken included a demonstration, prayer vigil and side-walk counselling outside Marie Stopes abortuary. Taryn spoke with the boyfriend of a woman who was considering having an abortion. He seemed to realise some of the serious consequences of abortion and claimed that he would try to persuade her not to murder their child. We sang Amazing Grace with Piper James leading on the bagpipes and Jesus Loves the Little Children and prayed for lives to be saved and the abortionists to come to repentance.

Jesus – The World’s Greatest Revolutionary
As the ANC had hired out Cape Town stadium for their 103rd anniversary rally, we seized the opportunity to evangelise the comrades attending the rally. We distributed tracts such as “The World’s Greatest Revolutionary” and “Where Will You Spend Eternity?” and engaged in numerous one-on-one personal discussions.

National Day of Repentance March for Life and Parliamentary Prayer Vigil

Cape Town, 2 February 2015: a March for Life to Parliament was organised by the Christian Action Network to mark the 18th anniversary of the legalisation of abortion. This is the 18th year that the Christian Action Network has organised a National Day of Repentance.

Pro-life Billboard

Marchers in Cape Town carried small coffins, Christian flags and crosses and were led by a hearse. A new red six metre billboard trailer, with the words, “Abortion is Murder”, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8), and “Choose Life, so that you and your children may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19) accompanied the marchers.

Call to Repentance

Pastors from different denominations, took part in the procession and gathered afterwards to pray outside the main gates of Parliament in Cape Town. Participants at the Prayer Rally prayed a Scriptural Imprecatory Prayer, calling on the nation and government leaders to repent of the national sin of abortion and warning of God's Judgement if they do not Repent.

Sanctity Life Sunday

Throughout the country many church congregations and concerned individuals observed 25 January as Sanctity Life Sunday. They reflected on the tragic reality of abortion and proclaimed the sanctity of human life.  Other congregations observed 1 February as Sanctity Life Sunday.

Obituary notices were placed in the Cape Argus and Die Burger newspapers in memory of all babies killed by abortion since 1997.

Principals’ Meeting

In February, Taryn had an opportunity to share about the availability of Christian Action presentations to 25 government school principals in Cape Town. This resulted in new invitations to schools in the Cape Town area.

Boycott Fifty Shades of Grey Outreach

On Valentine's Day we conducted literature distribution and personal Evangelism in the Canal Walk shopping mall distributing Gospel leaflets on God's Love Languages and also leaflets that we designed to expose the abuse and bondage promoted in the much-advertised 50 Shades of Grey film. Many vigorous discussions ensued and it was a most profitable time of Evangelistic discussion. "Wisdom calls aloud outside; she raises her voice in the open squares. She cries out in chief concourses, at the opening of the gates in the city she speaks her words." Proverbs 1:20-21

South Africa for Christ

By God's grace, the Director of the Christian Action Network, Dr. Peter Hammond, the International Co-ordinator of Christian Action, Taryn Hodgson and Trainee Missionaries, Abrie and Feylin, completed a 5,600km Mission throughout 6 provinces of South Africa. In one month they conducted 140 meetings at 11 schools, 7 churches, 5 Mission stations, 2 Bible colleges, a Ministers' Conference and a Great Commission Seminar.

Dr. Peter Hammond presented a week of lectures on Church History at Back to the Bible Training College, was a key-note speaker at the Lord Abide With Us Ministers' Conference, attended by 1,500 delegates, at KwaSizabantu Mission in KwaZulu. Peter also conducted a two-day Great Commission Seminar at the William Carey School of World Missions near Durban.

Taryn conducted 27 meetings, including 3 Sunday schools, 17 school assemblies and classes, 3 Christian Action updates at churches and Missions and a Christian Action Workshop. The school meetings included giving the Fight the New Drug presentation (the harmful effects of pornography and how you can fight back) at 4 different schools, Traffick Proof at 3 different schools and one presentation on How to Survive at University at a Christian School. At each school where Fight the New Drug or Traffick Proof was presented, we gave each child a Fight the New Drug or Stop the Traffick tract.

Peter Hammond conducted 98 meetings, including 60 lectures, 20 radio programmes, 7 sermons, 6 school assemblies and 5 Bible studies.

The team delivered and distributed over 2.5 tonnes of Bibles, New Testaments, Gospel booklets, books, newsletters, tracts, magazines and audio visual materials, DVDs, MP3s, audio CDs and Digital Libraries to pastors, teachers, missionaries, Evangelists and chaplains.

A Christian Response to Xenophobia

In response to violent attacks on foreigners, we conducted radio programmes, public meetings and sent out Bible Studies on A Christian Response to Xenophobia on our email lists. We also posted PowerPoints and sermon audio links on our social media to mobilise Christians to respond Biblically to this crisis. The article was shared 72 times on social media, the PowerPoint was viewed over 9 292 times and the sermon audio had over 180 downloads. You can access these resources on the website.

The Battle for the Family

Russia banned internet pornography in a move to strengthen Biblical family values. The recent court order is one of at least 5 pro-family pieces of legislation to be enacted in Russia in the last three years. Other pro-family legislation includes the prohibition of propagating homosexuality, especially to children, the prohibition of homosexual public rallies, the criminalisation of abortion after 12 weeks, banning of abortion advertising, and cash benefits to couples who have more than one child.

Russia is the latest in European countries that are waking up to realise the devastating impact of pornography on society. Iceland is considering installing blocks on Internet porn. In 2014, the UK persuaded all internet service providers in the UK to automatically block pornography on all their users' internet-enabled devices.

We used these positive pro-family developments in Europe to educate and enlist others in pro-family battles. Our Russia Bans Internet Pornography article was published in JOY! Digital and had over 1 510 shares on social media in less than a week!

Way of the Master Evangelism Training Course and Outreaches

We ran an eight-part Way of the Master Basic Evangelism Training Course at a church in Cape Town. This Course trains you in how to share the Gospel simply, effectively and Biblically, the way Jesus – the Master Evangelist, did. We are trusting God that the participants will be motivated and mobilised to boldly evangelise their community.

We also participated in outreaches on the streets, at the V and A Waterfront and at the University of Cape Town with visiting Evangelists from Britain and America.

Protect Our Families Conference

The International Co-ordinator of the Christian Action Network, Taryn Hodgson gave presentations on How to Protect Your Family from Porn and Traffick Proof at a Pro-Life Conference organised by Human Life International in Cape Town. During the Conference, pro-life ministry leaders in the Western Cape met together to form the Western Cape Pro-life Alliance and discussed strategies for working together.

Mission to Kimberley and Pretoria

By God's grace, the Director of the Christian Action Network, Dr. Peter Hammond, the International Co-ordinator of Christian Action, Taryn Hodgson and Trainee Missionaries, Abrie and Feylin, also conducted a Mission to Kimberley and Pretoria in June.

We conducted church services, missions rallies and a four-day Biblical Worldview and Great Commission Seminar for the students of Africa 4 Jesus Bible School in Kimberley and delivered a trailer load of literature for their mission outreaches.

Soul Winning Seminar
Over 90 people participated in our Soul Winning Seminar at the Evangeliese Gereformeerde Kerk in Pretoria. It was tremendous to see many old friends and participants who had completed previous Great Commission Courses, pro-life activists, Evangelists, faithful friends, intercessors, and supporters. Peter’s first presentation was on Andrew Murray and the 1860 Revival. This was followed with The Challenge of Islam, Comparing the Bible with the Quran, Comparing Jesus and Muhammed, Evangelising Muslims, The Challenge of David Livingstone, Evolution Vs God and we together presented an Evangelism Workshop, which included The Way of the Master, Ten Commandments based Evangelism, and Taryn presented a Christian Action Workshop. Both Dr Hammond and Taryn recorded TV interviews for Kruis Kyk afterwards. The question times were packed and productive.
God's Word Will Not Return Void
On Sunday, Dr Hammond preached at two different Evangeliese Gereformeerde congregations and Abrie and Taryn gave presentations on Reaching Young People for Christ and Jesus and The Rich Young Ruler at an evening service.

Bible School Consultation
We were then off to set up for the Bible School Consultation, hosted by Mukhanyo Theological College. There were 70 participants, representing 20 Bible colleges from all over South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, Malawi, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Spiritual Insights from Examples of Excellence
Dr Peter Hammond was invited to present Spiritual Insights from Missionary Pioneers. He delivered presentations on William Carey – The Father of Modern Missions, Dr. David Livingstone – The Best Friend Africa Ever Had, and Charles Spurgeon – The Puritan Prince of Preachers. At the end of the Consultation he was part of a Panel Discussion, which fielded a wide range of questions for almost two hours.
Library Donations to Colleges
We had driven up a large amount of literature and audio visual materials to entrust to the various colleges. We distributed 20 boxes (each with 40 items) of books to donate to the library of each Bible College, as well as boxes of Chapel Library classic booklets, boxes of World Missionary Gospel booklets and boxes of Bibles and New Testaments. In addition, a wide variety of DVDs, MP3s, CDs and Digital Libraries, were distributed to lecturers and libraries.

Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion Under Attack

A Christian University of Cape Town (UCT) student was suspended from the Student Representative Council (SRC) for expressing her Biblical beliefs on her personal Facebook page.Zizipho Pae, a final year Economics and Statistics student and Vice-President of the SRC at UCT, joined millions of people around the world by posting her opinion on her Facebook page in response to the US Supreme Court ruling that legalised same-sex “marriage" in all 50 states in America. The backlash to her brief post went beyond irrational. Homosexual activists at UCT launched a vicious tirade of hate and intimidation against her that defies description. Ironically, the attackers demand tolerance. Homosexual pornography and the most depraved anti-Christian blasphemy was posted on her Facebook page. She was also personally threatened, insulted and vilified in most despicable ways. We mobilised Christians to write to UCT Vice Chancellor Dr Max Price and speak up on her behalf.

Victory for Freedom of Religion

In response to the unlawful SRC ruling, Pae asked the Vice Chancellor to intervene. In a letter to Zizipho Pae, the UCT Vice-Chancellor stated that the decision to expel her from the SRC was found invalid and that she must be re-instated. Despite this delayed justice, this is a great victory for religious freedom and free speech in South Africa.

The Pink Agenda – Now Available as an E-book
Africa Christian Action's landmark book, The Pink Agenda – Sexual Revolution and the Ruin of the Family, published in 2001, was updated and published as an e-book on Christian Action promoted this and other resources to counter-act the accelerating radical homosexual agenda.

National Women’s Day Outreaches - 20th Year ofMissions in the Mall

"Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand; beside the gates leading into the city, at the entrances, she cries aloud." Proverbs 1:20-21

The Word of God Never Returns Void

76 Volunteers helped us distribute over 6 000 tracts, leaflets and Gospel booklets and over 2,000 balloons with Scripture messages on them, in 6 shopping malls on Monday, 10 August (National Women's Day) in South Africa.

Almost Trafficked

A woman came to our table, expressing her appreciation for our stand against human trafficking. She explained to us how she almost got tricked into being trafficked. A company called Magnum, was using deceptive job offers to recruit local women to be “married” to Pakistani men, so that they could obtain their “green card” into South Africa. Thankfully, when she heard of the scheme, she refused to participate and escaped unharmed. We urged her to report this scheme to Christian anti-trafficking organisations who can follow this case up with the Hawks.

Child Evangelism

The children were plainly delighted to be given these colourful balloons. Soon the shopping centres were filled with children carrying our colourful balloons with Scriptural messages. It must be hard, even for an irate atheist adult, to take a balloon away from a child! Soon we were seeing even Muslim women, wearing the black hijab, coming to receive balloons for their children.

Leading People to Christ

By God's grace, we were able to counsel 109 people through our Spiritual Well-Being Questionnaire, leading them through The Way of the Master and Evangelism Explosion questions to confront them with the Law of God and the reality of eternity. To each of these people we gave a free copy of the New Testament and/or The Biggest Question DVD. “Therefore the Law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by Faith.” Galatians 3:24

Abundant Life

One of our Missionary Trainees, Abrie, started a conversation with a group of fourteen-year-old teenage girls. He noticed that one of them had cuts all the way down her arm. When he asked where she would go if she was to die that night, she admitted “hell”, because she “belongs to the dark side”. She also admitted that she had tried to commit suicide last week. When Abrie shared with her the hope of the Gospel and that Jesus came to give us Life, and Life in abundance, she began to cry. He urged the three of them to repent of their sin, turn to Christ and watch the Biggest Question DVD together.

Cavendish Charity Book Sale

From Thursday 27 August to Sunday 30 August we had the opportunity to have a book table (actually 4 tables) at Cavendish Mall’s Charity Book Sale. As with our Women’s Day mall outreaches, this was an excellent opportunity for one-on-one evangelism, discussions, counselling and to educate shoppers on pro-life and pro-family issues.

Every person who came to our table received a Greatest Book in the World tract. We sold good quality, second-hand Bibles and Christian books donated to us by trusted authors at very reasonable prices and gave away lots of Gospel leaflets, Christian Action and JOY! Magazines and a number of New Testaments.

We conducted 33 Evangelistic Surveys with shoppers who approached our table (and some with staff of shops nearby). We had the opportunity to share the Gospel with people from six major worldviews or religious backgrounds – atheists, cultural christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and those holding to New Age/Eastern Philosophy. To each of these people, we gave a free copy of the New Testament and/or The Biggest Question DVD.

Evangelism Expo

Africa Christian Action participated in the Evangelism Expo in Tableview and distributed pro-life and pro-family resources. Our Literature4Africa Ministry distributed Bibles, New Testaments, Gospel booklets, tracts and audio-visual materials to Evangelists and pastors.

Audacity Premiere
As Ray Comfort's new film: Audacity – Love Cannot Stay Silent, arrived, we hosted a premiere at Livingstone House at the end of August.
From Living Waters, creators of the award-winning TV programme “The Way of the Master” and the hit movie “Evolution vs. God,” has come the powerful film Audacity. Executive produced by TV co-host and best-selling author and Evangelist Ray Comfort (Hell’s Best Kept Secret, Scientific Facts in the Bible), this film delivers an unexpected, eye-opening look at the controversial topic of homosexuality. Audacity uses a unique approach to encourage and equip Christians to lovingly proclaim the Gospel to homosexuals, yet also to take a firm stand against the redefinition of marriage.

School and Youth Group Meetings

Taryn and Abrie have had 12 opportunities to present Fight the New Drug (the science behind and solutions to pornography addiction) and/or Traffick Proof (modern-day slavery and warning about how traffickers trick and trap their victims) at schools this year. Four of the opportunities were at schools in Cape Town and 8 were at schools visited on the South Africa Mission. The presentations often spark significant discussions and questions from the children. One of the highlights was speaking at De Grendel High School in Milnerton. The Principal, who is a Christian, was very appreciative of the presentation and asked her to come back again and give the Traffick Proof presentation. At each school we visit, we donate a copy of the Porndemic book to the school and teachers’ library. Another highlight was speaking at Claremont High School. At most government schools, we are not permitted to preach the Gospel openly, so we get around this by saying that we can share the ultimate “cure” with individuals who approach us afterwards. Our leaflets also contain Scriptures and Gospel messages, which we are often permitted to give to each student. We presented Fight the New Drug to two Life Orientation classes at Claremont High School and also at a Youth Group in Bellville South. At each meeting, Abrie shared his testimony of how God set him free from an addiction to porn. As we were told we were not allowed to mention Jesus Christ or the Gospel at the school, we said we could share about “the cure” to addiction with individuals who spoke to us afterwards. After the presentation, a crowd gathered around Abrie seemingly desperate to hear about “the cure”. This gave Abrie a wonderful opportunity to share the Gospel. The Muslim teacher also encouraged every learner to take one of our Fight the New Drug leaflets (which contains a Gospel message) to paste in their Life Orientation workbooks. We praise God for these opportunities to present pro-family, Gospel-centred solutions to this scourge on youth.

International Life Chains Proclaim Right to Life of Pre-Born Babies
Up to a million Christians in approximately 1 800 locations worldwide took part in the various Life Chains this 4 October 2015, International Life Chain Sunday. The South African National March for Life, organised by the National Alliance for Life, took place in Umhlanga, Durban, with about

1 500 marching.Intermittent rain did not dampen the spirits of the stalwart Christians who formed a Life Chain to proclaim the sanctity of life in Cape Town. The Life Chain inCape Town took place on the centre island ofBuitengracht Street (near the entrance to the Waterfront). Life Chains also took place in: East London and Bloemfontein. The 40 Days for Life prayer vigil and outreach outside Marie Stopes abortuary (91 Bree Street, Cape Town) organised by Human Life International continued until 1 November. The Life Chain is an international prayer rally and peaceful placard protest against the abortion holocaust.

Reformation Day Seminar

For Reformation Day this year (31 October) we held a Day Seminar in Franschhoek, which included a Guided Tour of the Huguenot Museum and Monument by Dr Peter Hammond and a special Reformation Day Celebration Service at the Huguenot Monument. The Seminar included Discussion Groups on what we can practically do to reform our churches, education, the news media, entertainment and political spheres.

JOY! And JOY! Digital Magazine
Our News items about the Life Chains and our response to the Dutch Reformed Church Synod’s approval of same sex unions were published on JOY! DigitalJOY! Magazine reached its 100th edition this November (published in late October), which includes Dr Peter Hammond’s testimony of Frontline Fellowship - Putting Feet to Your Faith, and also A Christian Response to the Refugee Crisis in Europe as the main cover article and a review of Frans Cronje’s new film: Khumbula (on Rhino Conservation) and the popular Bible in a Nutshell series. Taryn’s article: Gender Mainstreaming - The Attempt to Abolish Male and Female Distinctives was published in the December edition.

Influencing the SA Law Reform Committee on Pornography and Children
The SA Law Reform Commission (SALRC) released an Issue Paper on the topic of "Children and Pornography." It included fifty discussion questions for comments from the public on several aspects of pornography legislation affecting children. Taryn sent a copy of her book Porndemic – How the Pornography Plague Affects You and What You Can Do About It to the SALRC. The Co-ordinator of the Advisory Committee requested nine more copies for all the committee members to study.

Outreach Opportunities

Dr Peter Hammond had the opportunity to speak at three different Historical Societies in the Western Cape and at a Farmers’ Meeting near Worcester. Many of the people who attend these societies are not born-again Christians, so these provided good witnessing opportunities and an opportunity to distribute Christian Action magazines, leaflets, and tracts.

Radio Opportunities

Dr Peter Hammond also had numerous radio opportunities to share a Biblical response to the refugee crisis in Europe, the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted, Halloween, the battle over History, the student protests and animals and conservation on Radio Tygerberg, Radio Pulpit, Cliff Central Radio and four different American radio stations.
