Christians Protest 17 Years of Legal Abortion (31 January 2014)

On 1 February 1997 abortion-on-demand was legalised in South Africa. By 1 February 2014 an estimated 1 200 000 South African babies have lost their lives through abortion - legally - with tax payers money.

Cape Town: Today (Friday, 31 January 2014), a funeral procession was organised by the Christian Action Network in memory of the thousands of babies, killed by abortion, who have never had a funeral. This is the 17th year that the Christian Action Network has organised a National Day of Repentance.

Marchers carried miniature coffins, Christian flags and crosses and were led by a hearse. A six metre billboard trailer, with the words, “Abortion Kills Babies”, and “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8) accompanied the marchers.

Over 60 Christians, including pastors from different denominations, took part in the procession and gathered afterwards to pray outside the main gates of Parliament in Cape Town.

Participants at the Prayer Rally prayed a Scriptural Imprecatory Prayer, calling on the nation and government leaders to repent of the national sin of abortion and warning of God's Judgement if they do not Repent.

Cheryllyn Dudley, ACDP Member of Parliament and Member of the Health Portfolio Committee, told participants of the Prayer Rally that is absolutely essential that Christians vote their values, vote pro-life and not waste their votes on parties that do not uphold the right to life of pre-born babies. “Abortion is legal in South Africa because the majority of Christians have given their votes to parties which support abortion.”

The Right to Life is the most basic right. Without the Right to Life, all other rights are meaningless. We cannot consider ourselves a society that values human rights if the most innocent and helpless of all people - pre-born babies are denied the right to life,” says Taryn Hodgson, International Co-ordinator of the Christian Action Network. “Life begins at conception. Abortion is murder. Every abortion stops a beating heart.”

We call the nation to prayer and repentance for this national sin of abortion.”

Obituary notices were placed in the Cape Argus and Die Burger newspapers in memory of all babies killed by abortion since 1997.

Sanctity Life Sunday

Throughout the country many church congregations and concerned individuals observed 26 January as Sanctity Life Sunday. They reflected on the tragic reality of abortion and proclaimed the sanctity of human life.  Other congregations plan to observe 2 February as Sanctity Life Sunday.

A pro-life demonstration and prayer rally will take place this weekend in East London and Bloemfontein, and a March for Life will be held in Durban on Sunday, 5 October. (See contact details below).
