Defacing of Andrew Murray Monument in Wellington is an Outrage (13 April 2015)

“The defacing of the Andrew Murray Monument in Wellington is an outrage,” says Missionary and Historian Dr Peter Hammond. “This is an attack on a Christian Monument. Andrew Murray was a greatly respected Pastor and Missionary. The whole of Africa has benefitted from his tremendous legacy. He established the Africa Institute, which sent out hundreds of missionaries with the vision of Africa for Christ. Andrew also pioneered women's education in South Africa and established the Huguenot College for training Christian teachers.”

Africa for Christ

“Under Andrew Murray’s leadership, the missionary vision of the Dutch Reformed Church exploded with mission stations being established in what is today Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, Nigeria and Sudan.

“Andrew Murray is the most prolific author in South Africa’s history. His 240 books have sold millions of copies and been translated into more languages than any other South African author. His ministry was blessed with the most extraordinary Revival in South African history, in 1860.

“If mobs can remove one historic monument, then no monument is safe. This is a battle over history. It is a war against civilisation, the rule of law and education itself! To deface or damage national monuments is a serious crime and the complicity of authorities in this undermines respect for law and property. This will chase away tourists and investors from the country. The vandals must be prosecuted.”
